Course Description

Learn 2 different mediums to create amazing catching mosaic eyes using watercolor paint to then translate it into mosaic glass working with the Byzantine Indirect Technique.

The course will include an introduction to watercolor, the medium that will help you create most beautiful mosaics, learn how to make your own ancient paste recipe and then mosaic work will start using the Byzantine indirect technique using all kind of glass and other materials.
Carole will share the secrets to achieving amazing life-like eyes in mosaic.

We will start our project by a quick drawing/stencil of the eyes. Having our canvas ready, we will start learning about watercolor. Even if you have never painted, this exercise will be very helpful for any future project. If you don’t like the finishing of your watercolor you will have the image of your eyes on a canvas to mosaic. Carole has taught many beginners, some practices on watercolor papers will be done previous to final painting. Keep an open mind!
Once the watercolor is done, the colors in each eye will be examined and, as each eye is unique, each student will draw the Andamento and pick the correct colors for their work.
We will learn and practice the Byzantine Indirect Technique using smalti, Kismets and other kinds of glass using double wheeled nippers. We will work with Honey Paste and the recipe will be shared. This is temporary glue that we will use to glue all our tesserae in the reverse method.
Carole will demonstrate different cutting techniques and the tricks to using double wheeled nippers. From there on, we will continue working on our mosaic.

As we continue working on our mosaics, Carole will present several slideshows and provide hands-on guidance.

In the morning of the 5th day, we will cast our mosaics. After a group lunch and lots of inspired conversation, we unveil the projects one by one. Clean up and touch ups will follow. Grouting will be optional, although recommended for outdoor installation.

The workshop language will be in English. Carole also speaks French and Arabic.

Carole will be awarding each person who attends her workshop with a hand signed Certificate to commemorate the occasion.
