Course Description
An ideal technique to paint with glass, starting from watercolor to glass. You will be able to create a detailed, painterly image, using different kind of materials including Smalti, Kismets, other glass and natural stone. The result will be a smooth finished mosaic that can be safe for indoor and outdoor installations.
The course will include an introduction to watercolor, the medium that will help you create most beautiful mosaics, learn how to make your own ancient paste recipe and then mosaic work will start using the Byzantine indirect technique using all kind of glass and other materials.
We will start this class with a quick drawing/stencil of our portraits. Having our canvas ready, we will then start learning about watercolor. Even if you have never painted, this exercise will be very helpful for any future project. If you don’t like the finishing of your watercolor you will have the image of your portrait on a canvas to mosaic. Some practices on watercolor papers will be done previous to final painting.
In the afternoon, we will learn and practice the Indirect Technique using smalti, and other kinds of glass using double wheeled nippers.
You will learn about the Honey Paste. This is temporary glue that we will use to glue all our tesserae in reverse.
We will study the colors on each of the portraits, and as each piece will be unique, each student will try to draw his or her own andamento to help make adding the right colors in the right place easier.
A demonstration of cutting tesserae with wheeled nippers, using different materials starting with smalti.
On the 2nd and 3th days as we continue working on our mosaics, Carole will present several slideshows and provide hands-on guidance.
On the 4th day we will try to wrap up and fill in as much of the portrait as possible.
In the morning of the 5th day, we will cast our mosaics. After a group lunch and lots of inspired conversation, we unveil the projects one by one. Clean up and touch ups will follow. Grouting will be optional, although recommended for outdoor installation.
The workshop language will be in English. Carole also speaks French and Arabic.
Carole will be awarding each person who attends her workshop with a hand signed Certificate to commemorate the occasion.
