March 30 – May 27, 2016!

“Serapias Laventina” M1 is a mosaic bas-relief from my Art and Biodiversity, Wild Lebanese Orchids series which is a project dedicated to nature conservation and awareness. The project, which I started in 2007, arose from a desire to better understand and communicate the value of biodiversity to myself and those around me. Moved by the orchid Serapias Laventina, I sought to symbolize the yoke that bonds humanity with nature by dressing the woman in the orchid’s petals. In this dance, the pale pink and white colors of her face, the light green, and the dark fuchsia colors reflect the pigments of the wild flower, uniting the natural world with the human. As the orchids of her dressings blur the line between her form and the flowers, so does this mosaic hope to remind us that regardless of all else, we are forever the sons and daughters of Mother Nature’s womb.

Inspired by the Photographs of Khaled Sleem, and supported by AUB Nature Conservation Center, American University of Beirut.
