I feel challenged when I do mosaic portraits. Starting with the eyes, each little tile inspires the next, and so on.
Working with both techniques- Byzantine Indirect mixed with Direct technique- I have recently started making bas-relief works that have added extra volume and a play of shades to the color and texture in my mosaics.
This bas-relief mosaic depicts Lebanese/Arabic eyes.
I dedicate this mosaic to Bill Buckingham. I bought all the shells and Paua from him, Mosaic Rocks, and I kept them in my drawer for 5 years. I was admiring their beautiful colors while working only with smalti. I told him that I will send him photos of my work when I finally use them. I hope he can see them now!
